WOODEN BATHTUBS MADE FROM NATURAL ESSENCES

CENTURIES-OLD CRAFTSMANSHIP

For many generations, specialised craftsmen from the renowned forest regions of the Japanese Alps have been making bathtubs from local species of wood that are particularly suitable for this purpose. Thanks to local bathing traditions and relevant experience in wood processing, a high level of expertise has been acquired, both in the selection and processing of materials and in the development of models and shapes. The handcrafted production thus results in valuable unique pieces. These can be found in countless Japanese spas, the so-called ryokan or onsen-ryokan, but also in stylish private homes.

AUTOCHTHONOUS WOODS FROM JAPANESE FORESTS

The tubs are made of the unique goboku woods, those five typical Japanese coniferous leaf trees: hiba - hinoki - koyamaki - nezuko - sawara. Due to special ethereal ingredients, these autochthonous woods are characterised by high water resistance, fragrant scent and an antibacterial and calming effect. Accordingly, the bathtubs made from them are left "natural", i.e. the wooden surfaces are not varnished and the pores remain open.

FURNISHING THE IMPERIAL PALACES

Over the years, the Japanese Imperial House has entrusted one of our suppliers several times with the production of various wooden bathtubs in hinoki and koyamaki for the residences in Tokyo and Kyoto. A special feature of the bathtub pictured above concerns the wall sections, which were made out of a single board of a tree of considerable diameter.

ORDER-BASED PRODUCTION

Since all bathtubs are handcrafted in solid wood, they are ordered and manufactured according to the customer's personal wishes:
- dimensions (for 1-2 persons or larger such as hotel applications)
- shape (cube-shaped, oval, round with different diameters)
- positioning (free-standing, built-in, more or less recessed in the floor)
- design details, tub-cover to keep water warm
- choice of wood species (characteristic grain and colour, essential ingredients, etc.)

MAINTENANCE OF THE TUBS

We can advise you on the many options and correct care to keep the tubs functional and beautiful for a long time. A small effort for real wood lovers and nature lovers.

ACCESSORIES FOR THE JAPANESE BATH

A few utensils are needed for bathing in style of the Japanese way: a stool and wash bowl for the cleansing ritual outside the bath, as well as suitable clothing for the time after the bath (yukata and zori), in order to let the sensation of pleasant relaxation last as long as possible.
